Institute of World Business Law

The ICC Institute of World Business Law acts as a think-tank working closely with ICC commissions and the ICC International Court of Arbitration to provide a unique training method and tool. It provides practitioners and company executives with an interactive training programme on international arbitration and negotiating international contracts.

The Institute organizes conferences and colloquia on a range of topical subjects, to pass on ICC's outstanding expertise in the field of international business law. Subjects covered are related mostly to the world of arbitration.

The Institute's yearly training calendar includes numerous PIDA programmes i.e. interactive 4-day seminars using two different formulas i.e. a study of a mock-case under the ICC Rules of Arbitration, and a study of a mock case on negotiating, drafting, managing international contracts and conflict resolution. Most PIDA seminars are held in Paris in English/French with simultaneous interpretation, and are occasionally also held abroad (Dakar in 2004, Algiers in 2005). Since 2003, one yearly PIDA seminar is conducted entirely in Spanish.

The Institute's yearly training programme also includes:

  • two International Advanced Arbitration Practice Workshops (IAAP) i.e. 2-day workshops to provide a unique forum for experienced arbitration practitioners who wish to increase and update their knowledge and practice of international commercial arbitration,
  • an Arbitration and Managers one-day intensive seminar especially built for business-people and managers whose companies may be involved in arbitral proceeding,
  • a Colloquium of Young Arbitrators,
  • a conference on Audiovisual Law held in Cannes during the Film Festival and seen as the forum for all international entertainment lawyers and executives involved in the film industry.

While training is the most visible part of the Institute's activities, it is also a think-tank that works closely with ICC policy commissions and ICC's International Court of Arbitration. Once a year, the Institute holds its Annual Meeting where some of the world's leading legal experts gather to share knowledge and expertise on a chosen topical issue. One of the aims of this conference is to create doctrine, the result of which is now compiled in an annual publication, "Dossiers of the Institute".

They provide the Institute with a wealth of expertise in many fields of international law and practice by assisting with the planning and implementation of research programmes, by speaking and writing at conferences and seminars, and by promoting Institute activities in their home countries.
