ICC arbitration workshop grows increasingly popular

Chairman of the Institute of World Business Law Serge Lazareff

Paris, 23 February 2005 -- ICC's Institute of World Business Law yesterday concluded its first International Advanced Arbitration Practice Workshop of the year.

The increasing popularity of arbitration as a means of dispute settlement has resulted in growing demand for the intensive arbitration training courses in recent years.

Speaking on Monday to a full house of 40 participants, Professor and Attorney at Law Ergun ?zsunay (Istanbul) said:

"The scope of arbitration is expanding. Previously it had only been used in the law of contracts but has now reached into areas such as intellectual property, e-contracts and even competition law. Arbitration is one of the most important fields of law today. It has a very bright future. Every lawyer should have a basic knowledge of the arbitration process."

The bi-annual International Advanced Arbitration Practice Workshop provides participants with an opportunity to heighten their understanding of current issues in international commercial arbitration.

The two-day workshop ended on Tuesday with a topical forum on the changing attitudes towards confidentiality in arbitration, often considered to be one of the most appealing factors for choosing the process.

"I deeply believe confidentiality is an inherent part of arbitration," said Serge Lazareff, Chairman of the Institute of World Business Law. "It is our duty as practitioners of international arbitration to fight for confidentiality within legal limits - the only limits being legal requirements."

The Institute's intensive arbitration training courses are unique and cover a wide range of arbitration-related subjects. Each session is limited to 40 participants to keep debates interactive and informal. Participants come from business and the legal profession, and represent both emerging and industrialized economies.

Anthony Canham, Registered and Chartered Arbitrator, Adjudicator and Mediator, has been involved in over 300 arbitration cases. He emphasized his appreciation of the workshop. "I come for two reasons; self-improvement and networking," he said. "There is always something to learn here."

The ICC Institute of World Business Law draws together the finest minds in the legal profession to hold colloquia on a variety of issues and to train jurists and business people from all over the world. In 2005 its courses and seminars will deal with a diverse range of subjects including, the negotiation of contracts, international commercial arbitration and international audiovisual law.

The next International Advanced Arbitration Practice Workshop will take place on 7-8 November 2005.
